This Shay was a derelict from an estate that I was able to pick up. It is a first generation Shay with the crumbling plastic trucks and when I opened it up found the tender full of silt completely covering the Phoenix 97 sound board and battery. The Shay had been beautifully detailed and weathered at one time but by the time it came into my possession was in pretty rough shape all over.
I cleaned it up and surprisingly enough with a new battery and speaker the sound came on line so I added a pair of new cast metal trucks. I re-lettered it for my line with vinyl lettering and did some other minor repair work and put it in service on my railroad.
At this time it is track powered one of the few on the railroad, so the Shays future calls for on board battery, RC control, and a new Phenix sound system.
